How totals and empty cells work

Totals combine original observations. A mean total is weighted by the number of nonblank numeric observations; it is not the average of the displayed means. Sums and extrema retain exact plain-decimal values. Means display six decimal places at most; JSON includes their exact numerator and denominator.

Numeric blanks are skipped. A cell with no numeric observations is empty (shown as —), while row count uses zero for absent combinations. Blank category labels and the literal text “[blank category]” remain separate groups. Categories keep first-appearance order and are case-sensitive. CSV totals are the final row and column; JSON labels their roles separately.

Spreadsheet formula protection adds an apostrophe to potentially active CSV cells, including headings. This may include negative numeric strings. JSON preserves original labels and decimal strings.

UTF-8 files up to 2 MiB / one million characters. Up to 5,000 source rows, 100 columns and 100,000 cells; 200 row groups × 40 column categories. Numeric values must be plain signed decimals, up to 100 characters, without separators or exponents. No processing upload or saved source history. Using CSV Pivot Table

Compare categories across a cross-tab and export the complete pivot with row, column and grand totals.

  1. Paste CSV or load a UTF-8 file. Choose the delimiter and whether the first row is a header.
  2. Choose one or two row categories, a different column category, and a calculation. Numeric calculations also need a value column.
  3. Build the pivot, compare the totals and download CSV or JSON.

Example

Try the example: Books in North sums 0.10+0.20 exactly to 0.3.
Switch to Mean. The grand mean is 11.81 from five numeric observations, while the sixth blank value is skipped.

Questions & answers

What is a pivot table?

A cross-tab that groups source records into row and column categories and summarizes each combination. This tool also calculates marginal and grand totals.

How are mean totals calculated?

They combine the original nonblank numeric observations, weighted by their counts. They are not averages of the displayed group means.

Are sums exact?

Plain-decimal sums and extrema use integer-based decimal arithmetic. Means display at most six decimal places; JSON includes exact fraction strings.

How are blanks handled?

Blank numeric values are skipped. Numeric cells without observations are empty, shown as a dash. Row-count cells for absent combinations are zero. Empty category labels remain distinct from any literal text label.

What file sizes are supported?

UTF-8 files up to 2 MiB and one million characters,5,000 rows,100 columns and 100,000 data cells. Pivots allow200 row groups and 40 column categories.

Are exported CSV files protected from formulas?

Potentially active cells and headings receive an apostrophe prefix. This can include negative numeric strings. JSON preserves original labels and decimal strings.

Is my data uploaded?

Processing occurs in the browser without a processing upload or saved source history. Website ads and analytics follow the privacy information.
