Using Fixed-Width Text & CSV Converter
Convert CSV or TSV to aligned fixed-width text, or split a fixed-width file into CSV using explicit column widths. Preserve identifiers and preview column positions.
- Paste CSV/TSV or fixed-width text. Choose the conversion direction and CSV separator.
- For CSV, leave widths blank to calculate them or supply widths. For fixed-width text, enter the original widths and choose padding removal.
- Convert, review the column positions, and download the complete text or CSV. Save the width table for future imports.
Example
Try the included editable example. For CSV, leave widths blank to calculate them or supply widths. For fixed-width text, enter the original widths and choose padding removal.
Questions & answers
How are widths measured?
Each Unicode code point counts as one character. Emoji sequences, combining characters, tabs and East Asian characters may have different display widths; this does not calculate terminal cells or UTF-8 bytes.
Can I preserve leading zeros?
Yes. CSV cells remain strings; the tool does not infer numbers or dates. Padding is added around the original values.
Will long cells be truncated?
No. Choose Expand to enlarge a column or Stop to reject the conversion and show its required width.
Why does fixed-width import reject my line?
Every line must have exactly the sum of the configured widths, including trailing spaces. This prevents a wrong width list from silently shifting columns.
Are headers special?
No. Every CSV row, including a header if present, is converted as ordinary data. The width table lists 1-based character positions for each column.
What are the limits?
Up to 100,000 input characters, 2,000 rows, 50 columns and 200 characters per column. CSV multiline cells and tabs inside cells are rejected for fixed-width export. Processing stays in your browser.
