    What each person owes

Using Itemized Bill Splitter & Tip Calculator

Split a restaurant, bar or delivery bill fairly when people ordered different things. Add the people, paste the receipt or type the items, tap who had what and share dishes between any group. Tax, tip, coupons and fees are divided in proportion, every share is rounded to the exact cent so the parts add up to the bill, and the splitter tells you who should pay whom.

    1. In People, type the names of everyone at the table.
    2. In Items, paste the receipt text or add items, then tap the names of the people who had each one. Items with nobody tapped are shared by everyone.
    3. In Tax & tip, enter the tax from the receipt (or your local rate), pick a tip percentage and add any coupon or fee.
    4. In Paid by, choose who paid the bill; leave the amount empty for the person who covered the rest.
    5. Read each person’s share, open Settle up for who pays whom, then copy the summary or download a PDF.

    Example

Four friends share calamari ($16) and a $54 bottle of wine between two of them. With 8.875% tax and a 20% tip on the $175 subtotal, the bill is $225.53; Ana, who had the ribeye and half the wine, owes $94.08 and the others pay her back.
Paste “2 Burger 25.98 / Fries 4.50 / Tax 2.95 / Total 36.18” and the splitter adds two items at $12.99 each and fries, sets the tax and checks the total.

    Questions & answers

How do you split a bill when people ordered different things?

Add up what each person ordered, split shared dishes between the people who had them, then share tax and tip in proportion to each person’s food total. This splitter does all of it and rounds to the cent.

Should tax and tip be split evenly or by what each person ordered?

Tax is charged on what each person ordered, so dividing it in proportion is fairest. Tip is usually divided the same way, but you can choose to split the tip evenly.

Should you tip on the amount before or after tax?

Most people in the US tip on the pre-tax subtotal. You can switch to tipping on the total with tax if you prefer.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

For sit-down service in the US, 18% to 22% is common, 15% for basic service and 25% or more for exceptional service. Check whether a service charge was already added for large groups.

    What happens to leftover cents?

When an amount cannot divide evenly, the extra cents go to the people with the largest remainders, so the shares always add up to exactly the bill total.

Can several people pay the bill?

Yes. Add a row per payer with the amount each put in; leave one row empty for whoever covered the rest. The settle-up list then shows the fewest payments needed to even out.

    Is my receipt uploaded anywhere?

No. The text you paste and every calculation stay in your browser.
