Compare two texts

Word-level comparison, up to 600 whitespace-separated tokens per text. Whitespace-only changes are ignored. Deletions are crossed out; additions are underlined.

Character frequency

Count visible characters, excluding whitespace. Displays the 100 most frequent characters.

How counting works

Word and sentence counts use your browser’s language-aware segmentation when available. Characters count visible grapheme clusters, including whitespace and line breaks; older browsers fall back to Unicode code points. A paragraph is a nonempty block separated by a blank line. Lines include empty lines and a trailing newline. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute.

Numbers count as word-like tokens. Punctuation does not. Tokenization can vary with language and browser. The editor supports up to 100,000 UTF-16 text units; no draft is saved or uploaded.

Using Word Counter

Check the length and structure of an essay, message or draft. Live statistics distinguish words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines.

  1. Type, paste or open a text file in the editor.
  2. Read the live counts and optionally set a word target.
  3. Open advanced sections for comparison or cleanup; preview changes before applying them.

Example

Input: Hello world!

A new paragraph.
Counts: 5 words, 2 paragraphs and 3 lines.

Questions & answers

Why are paragraphs and lines different?

A line ends at a line break. Paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines. Empty text has zero lines and zero paragraphs.

How are emoji counted?

When supported by the browser, character counts use Unicode graphemes, so a joined emoji can count as one visible character. UTF-16 units and code points are shown separately.

Does the tool upload my draft?

No. Counting, cleanup and gzip measurement run locally. The draft is not saved or submitted.

Is the gzip size an estimate?

No. It measures actual browser gzip output when CompressionStream is available. Short text can become larger because gzip adds headers.
