APNG Animation Workbench
Create fades, reveals and scrolling loops, import sprite sheets, and edit full-color animated PNGs: import APNG or still images, reorder frames, change timing and loops, resize, preview and export verified APNG, PNG frame ZIPs or sprite sheets.
1. Add frames
Up to 20 MiB per file, 100 frames, 4 million pixels per frame and 16 million total frame pixels. Still images must share dimensions. Resize images first if needed. APNG is decoded into composited full frames.
Create animation from selected frame
Replaces the frame sequence; Undo restores it. Fades change alpha, reveals keep original pixels, scrolling wraps pixels without resampling. Preview against a background to see fading.
Import a sprite sheet
No sheet loaded · up to 20 MiB / 4 million pixels.
Reads left to right, then top to bottom. Cell dimensions must divide the sheet exactly; use frame count to exclude unused trailing cells. Replaces current frames, with Undo available. Uses New / uniform delay below.
2. Timing & output
Speed scales the stored frame delays. Preview honors the selected loop count. Minimum exported delay: 10 ms.
Trim frames
Add frames or try the example.
Your animation appears here.
No frames loaded.
Exports use decoded 8-bit RGBA frames. Original metadata, 16-bit samples and source profiles are not retained. A one-frame export is a still PNG.
Frame strip
Click a frame to select it. Drag cards to reorder, or use Move left/right. Frame delays remain attached to their frames.
Using APNG Animation Workbench
Create and edit full-color animated PNGs: import APNG or still images, reorder frames, change timing and loops, resize, preview and export verified APNG, PNG frame ZIPs or sprite sheets.
- Add an APNG or still images of equal dimensions, or try the demo.
- Reorder frames, set their delays, trim a range and choose output dimensions, sampling and loop count.
- Preview, then create and download an APNG. PNG frames and sprite sheets include timing or layout JSON in their ZIP.
Example
Create a full-color transparent animation from PNG frames. Open an APNG, reverse it and export a timed frame sequence for a game.
Questions & answers
Does APNG have the same color limit as GIF?
No. APNG can preserve full-color RGBA frames. This tool exports decoded 8-bit RGBA and verifies every exported frame pixel against the chosen output frames.
Can I reverse APNG without reducing colors?
Yes. The tool decodes composited full frames, reverses their order with their delays, then verifies the exported frame pixels. Source metadata and 16-bit samples are not retained.
Why must still images have the same dimensions?
Each frame shares one animation canvas. Resize your images before importing so the tool does not silently crop or distort them.
Are GIF and video imports supported?
This page accepts APNG and still images. Use GIF to Video Converter for GIF-to-APNG, or Video to GIF Converter followed by GIF-to-APNG for a video workflow.
Does it respect the original frame delays and loops?
APNG delays and loop count are imported. You can override delays, apply a speed multiplier or choose a new loop count. Extremely short delays are clamped to 10 ms.
What are the size limits?
Up to 100 frames, 4 million pixels per frame and 16 million total frame pixels. Individual source files must be nonempty and no larger than 20 MiB. Sprite sheets have an 8 million pixel limit.
Are my frames uploaded?
Processing and exports run in browser workers. The website also runs ads and analytics as described in its privacy policy.
Can I animate a single image?
Yes. Select a frame and choose fade in/out/pulse, a directional reveal or wrapped scrolling. Create 2–100 frames with a chosen delay. Generation replaces the current sequence, and Undo restores it. The 16 million total-frame-pixel limit still applies.
Can I import a sprite sheet?
Yes. Load a still image and specify cell width, cell height and frame count. Cells are read left to right, top to bottom. Cell dimensions must divide the sheet exactly; exclude empty trailing cells with the frame count. The imported sequence replaces current frames, with Undo available.
Do generated effects preserve original pixels?
Scrolling moves whole RGBA pixels without interpolation. Reveals preserve selected pixels and hide the rest with alpha zero. Fades deliberately change alpha. APNG export verifies the generated output frames, not equality with the unchanged source.
