1. Set up your input

Circular averaging treats the clock as a circle: 23:50 and 00:10 average to midnight. Arithmetic averaging treats both as times on one day: their average is noon. No dates, time zones or daylight-saving transitions are inferred.

Using Average Time Calculator

Average a list of clock times using a same-day arithmetic mean or a circular mean around midnight. Review earliest/latest times and export the calculation report.

  1. Enter HH:MM or HH:MM:SS clock times on separate lines.
  2. Choose circular averaging for values around midnight, or arithmetic averaging for a same-day calculation.
  3. Read the average and method. Save the report, including circular concentration when applicable.

Example

Circular averaging treats the clock as a circle: 23:50 and 00:10 average to midnight. Arithmetic averaging treats both as times on one day: their average is noon. No dates, time zones or daylight-saving transitions are inferred.

Questions & answers

Why do the two methods disagree?

Clock time wraps at midnight. An arithmetic mean places 23:50 and 00:10 at noon; a circular mean places them at midnight. Choose the interpretation that fits your task.

What does circular concentration mean?

It ranges from 0 to 1. Values near 1 cluster around a similar clock time; values near 0 are widely spread, making the mean less informative.

Can every list have a circular mean?

No. Opposite or evenly distributed times can have no unique direction. The tool reports this instead of returning a misleading time.

Can I average elapsed durations here?

This page accepts clock times within a day. It does not interpret multi-day durations or calendar timestamps.

Is my input uploaded for processing?
