Bookkeeping Ledger
Full workspaceSimple small-business books in your browser, like a free QuickBooks or Wave for freelancers and sole proprietors. Record income and expenses, import bank and card CSV statements with automatic column detection, let rules categorise transactions, reconcile accounts, then see a profit & loss report by month or quarter and a Schedule C summary, and export to CSV or Excel.
Private: your books stay in this browser (autosaved) and in backup files you download. Nothing is uploaded. Not tax advice – check the figures with your accountant.
Using Bookkeeping Ledger
A free, QuickBooks-style ledger for freelancers, sole proprietors and small businesses that runs in your browser. Record income, expenses and transfers across bank, card and cash accounts, import bank statements as CSV, let rules categorise transactions automatically, reconcile against your statement, and see your profit and loss by month or quarter plus a Schedule C summary. Your books are autosaved in this browser and in backup files you download.
- Explore the sample books, or press New and set your business name, accounts and opening balances on the Accounts tab.
- Add transactions with the Add button (or the N key), choosing income, expense or transfer, the account and a category.
- Import a bank or card CSV on the Import tab: check the detected columns and date format, review suggested categories and skipped duplicates, then import.
- Create rules on the Categories & rules tab so recurring payees are categorised automatically, and map each category to a Schedule C line.
- Pick a period and open Reports for profit and loss and the Schedule C summary, then download an Excel workbook or CSV, and save a backup file.
Example
A designer imports six months of checking and credit-card CSVs; rules file Adobe under Office & software and Stripe payouts under Services, and the P&L shows $24,900 income, $9,300 expenses and $15,600 profit. Before filing, the Schedule C summary lists advertising, software, meals at 50% and equipment by line number to hand to an accountant.
Questions & answers
Is this a free alternative to QuickBooks?
For simple single-entry bookkeeping, yes: income and expenses, accounts, bank CSV import, rules, reconciliation and profit and loss reports are free without an account. It does not do payroll, invoicing, inventory, sales tax filing or live bank feeds.
Where is my data stored?
In your browser's local storage on this device, saved automatically. Download a backup file regularly and open it to continue on another device; nothing is uploaded.
Which bank files can I import?
CSV, TSV or semicolon-separated exports from most banks and cards. The tool detects the header row, date, description and either an amount column or separate debit and credit columns, and lets you change the mapping and date format.
How are duplicates detected?
A transaction with the same date, amount, type, account and similar description as one already in your books is flagged and skipped, so importing overlapping statements is safe. You can choose to import them anyway.
Is the Schedule C summary my tax return?
No. It groups your categories by Schedule C line, counts meals at 50% and leaves out owner's draws, as a planning summary to check with a tax professional.
Can I export to Excel?
Yes. Reports export an Excel workbook with transactions, profit and loss, Schedule C and account balances, and the Transactions tab exports the filtered list as CSV or Excel.
How do I reconcile an account?
Tick each transaction that appears on your statement, then type the statement's ending balance on the Accounts tab; a zero difference means your books match.
