Using Online Spreadsheet Editor
A free, Excel-style spreadsheet in your browser for when you don’t have Excel, its license has expired or it won’t open. Open an .xlsx, .xls, .ods or .csv file, edit cells and formulas, format numbers, sort and clean data, add sheets and charts, then save it back as .xlsx, .ods or CSV. Nothing is uploaded: the file is read and saved on your own device.
- Open a file with File → Open (or drag it onto the grid), or start from the example or a new workbook.
- Click a cell and type a value, or a formula that starts with =. While typing a formula, click or drag over cells to insert their references.
- Use Home to format numbers as currency, percent or dates, and to add bold, colours, borders and alignment.
- Drag the small square at the corner of a selection to fill a series or copy formulas; use Data to sort, remove duplicates or find and replace.
- Save with File → Save .xlsx (or .ods / CSV). Use Project (.json) to keep bold, colours and borders for later editing here.
Example
Open a sales export, type =SUMIF(B:B,"North",E:E) to total the North region, format the result as currency and save it back as .xlsx for a colleague. Select labels and numbers, choose Insert → Chart from selection and download the chart as PNG for a report.
Questions & answers
Can I edit an Excel file online without Microsoft Office?
Yes. Open the .xlsx file here, edit it and save it again as .xlsx. Everything runs in your browser, so you do not need an Office license, an account or an install.
Which formulas are supported?
More than 120, including SUM, AVERAGE, IF, IFS, IFERROR, SUMIF(S), COUNTIF(S), AVERAGEIF(S), VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, text functions, dates such as EDATE, EOMONTH, NETWORKDAYS and DATEDIF, and finance functions such as PMT, FV, NPV and IRR. Unknown functions show #NAME? instead of a wrong result.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and saved in your browser. Your work is also kept in this browser between visits until you start a new workbook.
What is kept when I save as .xlsx?
Values, formulas with their last results, number formats, sheet names and column widths. Bold, colours and borders are kept in the project (.json) file; the free spreadsheet library used here does not write cell styles to .xlsx.
What is not supported?
Macros (VBA), pivot tables, merged cells, conditional formatting, data validation, comments and array (spill) formulas. Files that contain them still open, but those parts are not shown or saved.
How big can a spreadsheet be?
Up to 500,000 cells across all sheets, 100,000 rows and 702 columns (A to ZZ) per sheet. Larger files are better handled by desktop software.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, the grid scrolls and you can tap a cell and type in the formula bar. A keyboard and mouse are more comfortable for large sheets.
