Map versions of the same page

Keep different articles or products in separate page groups.

Use actual translated or regional pages. x-default is an optional selector or fallback; it can share a URL with a language version.

Import a CSV map or paste rows

Columns: cluster, hreflang, url. Imports replace the map; Undo restores it. Up to 1,000 rows, 50 groups and 30 variants per group.

Why build a language map first?

It is easy to add a Spanish alternate to an English page and forget the return link. A map keeps the complete set together, generates consistent annotations and lets you compare pasted page source against that plan. Unlike a live crawler, this tool works with the files and markup you provide, so it can also help before a website is published.

Limits: 1,000 mapping rows, 50 page groups, 30 variants per group and 2 MiB per CSV/HTML/XML import file. Saved project files support up to 16 MiB; audits support up to 30,000 captured alternate declarations. HTML auditing reads link tags without running scripts. Processing stays in this tab; download a project to keep your work. Advertising and optional analytics follow the website’s privacy and consent settings.

Using Hreflang Generator & Checker

Connect equivalent language and regional pages with a reusable hreflang map. Generate consistent annotations and compare captured page markup against the map before or after publishing.

  1. Try the two-page example, or start a new map. Each page group represents one article, product or page in different languages or regions.
  2. Enter each language code and full URL. Add an optional x-default fallback and fix errors in the readiness checks.
  3. Generate HTML head tags, HTTP Link headers or per-origin XML sitemaps. Copy the selected output or download the complete installation ZIP.
  4. To inspect existing annotations, capture each mapped page’s HTML head or import a hreflang sitemap. Run the check and inspect the connection table.
  5. Download a project to continue later. Publish your chosen annotation method, verify the actual responses and monitor your webmaster reports.

Example

The home and pricing groups each have English, Spanish, German and fallback URLs. Each group exports its own complete alternate set.
Try a broken-link example in Check markup to see how a missing English return link from the Spanish page appears in the report.

Questions & answers

What is hreflang used for?

Hreflang identifies equivalent versions of a page for different languages or regions. It can help search engines choose an appropriate localized URL. It does not translate content, guarantee ranking or replace canonical and robots directives.

Does this checker fetch my website?

No. It validates your intended map and the HTML or XML you supply. Live status codes, redirects, robots restrictions, rendered JavaScript, content language and indexing are not checked.

Which language codes can I use?

This tool supports ISO 639-1 two-letter languages, optionally followed by an ISO 3166-1 two-letter region, plus x-default. Examples include en, en-US, en-GB and pt-BR. Script tags and numeric-region tags are outside this checker’s supported format.

Should I use en-UK or en-GB?

Use en-GB for English in the United Kingdom. UK is not the assigned ISO region code used by this checker. A region code by itself does not identify a language.

What is x-default?

It identifies a fallback destination for visitors whose language or region does not match the other variants. It is optional and often points to a language selector. It may share the same URL as a language version.

Do I need HTML tags, HTTP headers and XML together?

No. Choose the implementation method that fits your site. HTML tags go inside the head of each page. HTTP Link headers also work for non-HTML resources. XML annotations belong in a correctly published sitemap.

Why are self-references and return links important?

A language version should identify itself and its alternates. Alternate pages need links back to one another. The checker labels a missing captured page as unchecked, because a return link cannot be verified without its source.

Can language versions use different domains?

Yes. The generator accepts cross-domain alternates. XML files are split by origin, with each file listing its own URLs and the complete alternate links. Check hosting and verified-ownership requirements before submitting cross-site sitemaps.

Can I import hundreds of pages?

Yes. Import a CSV with cluster, hreflang and url columns. Use up to 1,000 rows, 50 page groups and 30 variants per group. Every group must represent equivalent content, not a collection of unrelated URLs.

Can I save projects and export reports?

Save project downloads your map and captured declarations as JSON. Open project restores them. Generated tags, headers, sitemaps and CSV maps can be downloaded individually or in a ZIP. Audit reports export as JSON or a connection-matrix CSV. Uncaptured markup editor text is not saved.

What are the import limits?

CSV, HTML and XML files must be UTF-8 and no larger than 2 MiB; saved JSON projects support up to 16 MiB. Text inputs support up to two million characters. Audits support 1,000 captured pages and 30,000 alternate declarations. Existing sitemap audits accept URL sets; sitemap indexes and DTD/entity declarations are not expanded.

Is my input uploaded or saved automatically?

Processing runs in this browser tab. There is no processing upload or automatic project saving. Download the project before leaving. Website advertising and optional analytics follow the site privacy and consent settings.
