Using Music Notation Editor

Write melodies, exercises and lead sheets on a single staff and hear them right away. Enter notes from your computer keyboard, the on-screen piano or by clicking the staff; the editor fills measures, ties notes across bar lines, beams eighths and places accidentals for the key. Print a PDF or continue in MuseScore with MusicXML.

  1. Set the title, clef, key, time signature and tempo in the Score tab, or open an example such as Ode to Joy or Twinkle, Twinkle.
  2. Choose a note length (3–7 on the keyboard) and type A–G to add notes. Use ↑ and ↓ for sharps, flats and other pitches, Ctrl+↑/↓ to change octave, 0 for a rest and . for a dot.
  3. Hold Shift while typing or clicking the piano to build chords. Add chord symbols and lyrics for the selected note in the Note tab.
  4. Press Space or Play to listen, with an optional metronome. Select notes to copy, paste, transpose or change their length.
  5. Download a PDF to print, or export MusicXML for notation programs and MIDI for music apps.

Example

Ode to Joy in D major: four bars of quarter notes with D and A chord symbols and lyrics under the notes, played back at 110 beats per minute.
A dotted half note followed by a half note in 4/4 is split at the bar line automatically and shown as two tied notes.

Questions & answers

Is this music notation editor free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. Your scores are not uploaded.

How do I enter notes quickly?

Pick a length with 3–7 (16th to whole note) and type the letters A–G. Each new note is placed close to the previous one; ↑ and ↓ move it by a semitone. The on-screen piano and clicking on the staff work too.

Can I open the score in MuseScore?

Yes. Export MusicXML and open it in MuseScore, Finale, Sibelius, Dorico or Noteflight. You can also open uncompressed MusicXML files here (first part, one voice).

Can I hear what I wrote?

Yes. Press Play or Space for playback with a simple piano sound and an optional metronome. Playback starts from the selected note.

Does it support chords, lyrics and chord symbols?

Yes. Stack notes into chords with Shift, add chord symbols such as Am7 above the staff and one line of lyrics below it.

Can I write piano music with two staves?

Not yet. The editor writes one staff (treble or bass) with one voice, which suits melodies, exercises, lead sheets and single instruments.

How do I print sheet music?

Download the PDF in A4 or US Letter and print at 100 %. PNG and SVG images are available for worksheets and websites.
