Random-choice Entropy: -

The estimate accounts for exclusions and duplicate avoidance. It is an upper bound: ambiguous or empty delimiters can reduce the output’s entropy. Batch size does not increase an individual phrase’s entropy. This is not a guarantee of account security.

How to Use

The default uses six randomly chosen words from the EFF long list. Small themed lists and grammatical patterns have far fewer possible combinations. Fixed words occupy the first positions; the remaining positions follow your selected pattern. Optional numbers and symbols are appended after all words.

Copy a phrase or export the whole batch as TXT, CSV, or JSON. Use show/hide and clear to control the results on this page. For character-based passwords, try the Password Generator, or browse all tools.

Word list: Electronic Frontier Foundation, CC BY 4.0. The EFF long list is bundled locally; dice identifiers were removed for browser sampling.

Using Passphrase Generator

Generate a sequence of random words that is easier to read and type. The default uses six words from the locally bundled EFF long word list.

  1. Start with the EFF word list and choose the number of words.
  2. Select a separator and any exclusions or fixed words.
  3. Generate and store the result in your password manager.

Example

Settings: six EFF words, spaces, no locked words.
Result: six newly sampled words. Fixed words and capitalization do not add randomness.

Questions & answers

How many words should I choose?

The default is six words from the 7,776-word EFF list. More randomly chosen words increase the number of possible phrases. Check the length limits of the service where you will use the result.

Do themes provide the same strength as the EFF list?

No. Creative themes and grammatical patterns use smaller pools. The displayed entropy estimate uses the selected filtered pools and is an upper bound.

What happens when I lock a word?

Locked words occupy positions in the phrase but add no random bits. Excluding words also reduces the available random pool.

Are my passphrases stored?

Generated phrases stay in page memory. The tool does not save or send them to the server. Preference storage contains settings only.
