Add Page Numbers to PDF
Number a report, booklet or document without turning its pages into images. Choose a header or footer, skip selected pages, and review the saved PDF.
1. Open a PDF
One static PDF up to 20 MiB and 200 pages. Encrypted, signed and form PDFs are unsupported.
No PDF loaded.
Choose a PDF to begin.
2. Choose your numbering
Use {n} for the number and {total} for the final number in the chosen numbering basis. Use just {n} for a plain label. A point is 1/72 inch. Roman numbers support 1–3999.
3. Preview & export
Open a PDF to preview it.
Preview uses actual PDF data and the same numbering as export. Comments and interactive annotations may not appear. Select Saved output after creating the PDF to verify the download.
Using Add Page Numbers to PDF
Add decimal or Roman page numbers to a PDF locally, with selected-page numbering and an actual saved-PDF preview.
- Open one static, unencrypted PDF up to 20 MiB and 200 pages. Forms and signature-related data are unsupported.
- Choose decimal or Roman numbers, a start number, label template, font and header or footer placement. Set a margin in PDF points.
- Select page ranges and an optional odd/even filter. Document position keeps skipped gaps; Selected pages numbers only chosen pages consecutively.
- Compare the numbering preview with the original, create the PDF, inspect Saved output and download the numbered document.
Example
A five-page PDF needs no number on the cover. Select 2-5, choose Selected pages, start at 1 and use Page {n} of {total}.
The cover stays unchanged; pages 2–5 receive Page 1 of 4 through Page 4 of 4.Questions & answers
Are PDFs uploaded?
No. Inspection, numbering and previews run locally in your browser with libraries served by this website. PDF content is not uploaded.
Will the text remain searchable?
The tool adds PDF text to existing pages rather than rasterizing the document. Existing searchable text and images remain; scanned pages do not become searchable automatically.
How can I skip a cover page?
Select a range starting at page 2, choose Selected pages and start at 1. The first selected page receives 1 and the cover receives no new label.
What does the numbering basis mean?
Document position assigns the start number to physical page 1 and keeps gaps for unselected pages. Selected pages assigns the start number to the first selected page and advances only across selected pages in document order.
What do {n} and {total} mean?
The template requires {n}, which is the page number. Optional {total} is the final number for the numbering basis: start plus document page count minus one, or start plus selected page count minus one. With a start above 1, this is the final number rather than the page count.
Can I use Roman numerals?
Yes. Choose lowercase or uppercase Roman numbering. Every number including the final {total} value must be from 1 to 3999; decimal numbering supports up to 999999.
Do ranges change the page order?
No. Ranges select pages in their existing document order. Duplicate entries are counted once. Odd and even filters use physical document positions, independent of the new numbering.
Can I remove existing numbers or change PDF page-label metadata?
No. This tool adds visible numbers. Existing printed numbers and PDF page-label metadata remain. Choose an empty header or footer area to avoid covering existing content.
Why does a PDF or label receive an error?
Use a static PDF up to 20 MiB and 200 pages without encryption, forms, signatures, custom page units or unsupported dimensions. Text must be supported by the selected standard PDF font and fit within the margins.
How can I check the download?
Create the numbered PDF, select Saved output, browse the pages and compare with Original. Changing numbering settings clears the previous output until a new PDF is created.
