ASCII Art Maker
Turn a picture or short message into character art. Tune its detail and shading, then copy the text or download a colored image.
1. Choose your source
Up to 20 MiB and 8 million pixels. Transparent pixels use the source matte below.
Up to 100 characters across five lines. Text is drawn with your device font, then sampled into ASCII; this is not a FIGlet font library.
2. Tune the detail
2–40 unique printable ASCII characters. Include a space at the light end for an open background.
Shading & image appearance
Source colors are sampled after transparency compositing. Brightness, contrast and inversion choose characters; they do not recolor the PNG ink.
3. Copy or download
Select the complete ASCII text manually
Paste into a monospace font and preserve spaces and line breaks. Proportional fonts and apps that collapse whitespace distort the art. The TXT preserves the complete grid; the PNG preserves its appearance.
Rows are capped at 180; very tall images may look compressed. Use a crop in Image Cropper first. PNG uses 10 × 20 pixel character cells; adjust the aspect ratio to match your chosen text font.

Using ASCII Art Maker
Build character art from a local picture or short message. Compare the plain-text grid and PNG preview, then choose the export that fits your destination.
- Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP, try the landscape demo, or switch to Text mode and enter a short message.
- Adjust columns, character aspect ratio and shading ramp. Open the shading options for contrast, brightness, dithering, source matte and PNG colors.
- Copy the ASCII text into a monospace destination, download its complete TXT, or switch to PNG preview and download a colored image.
Example
Try the landscape demo with 100 columns. Compare Classic and Two tones, then enable dithering to distribute shading differences. Switch to Text mode, type HELLO and choose the Two tones ramp. Turn off source colors and choose light PNG ink on a dark background for a readable banner.
Questions & answers
Which images can I use?
JPG, PNG and WebP up to 20 MiB, 8 million pixels and 16,000 pixels per edge. Transparency is composited with your chosen source matte before brightness is sampled. Animated images use a decoded frame; this is not an animated ASCII exporter.
How do I keep the copied art aligned?
Use a monospace font and preserve spaces and line breaks. Proportional fonts and apps that collapse whitespace distort character art. TXT preserves the complete grid; PNG preserves the rendered image appearance.
What do columns and aspect ratio change?
Columns set horizontal detail from 20 to 200. Rows follow the source dimensions and character width-to-height ratio, capped at 180. The default ratio 0.5 matches the 10 by 20 pixel PNG character cells. Tall sources may compress at the row cap; crop them first.
Does Text mode use FIGlet fonts?
No. It draws your message using a device sans-serif, serif or monospace font, then samples that image into ASCII. Up to 100 Unicode characters across five lines are supported. Very long lines are fitted to a bounded canvas and may need more columns.
How do custom shading characters work?
Enter 2–40 different printable ASCII characters, darkest first and lightest last. A space at the light end gives an open background. Glyph darkness varies by font, so a custom ramp may need experimentation.
What does dithering do?
It distributes brightness quantization errors to neighboring cells with Floyd–Steinberg error diffusion. This can represent smooth shading with fewer characters but may look noisier.
Do brightness or inversion recolor the PNG?
No. They affect character selection. Colored PNG ink comes from the sampled image after transparency compositing. Turn off source colors to use your chosen monochrome ink; the PNG background is separate from the source matte.
Are PNG and TXT identical formats?
Both use the same current character grid. TXT contains characters, spaces and line breaks without colors. PNG draws the grid with source or monochrome ink and a background, so it retains that rendering when shared.
Are my images uploaded?
No upload or stored input history is used for processing. Image decoding and conversion run in your browser using existing local helpers. Website ads and analytics follow the privacy information.
