Using GIF Background Remover
Remove a selected background color from animated GIFs. Choose edge-connected or global removal, preview frames and export transparent GIF or full-color APNG.
- Open a GIF and choose the background color. Click an opaque preview pixel to sample its color.
- Use edge-connected removal to protect enclosed regions, or remove matching colors everywhere. Increase tolerance carefully and preview several frames.
- Create the GIF or APNG, inspect the animation and download it. Changes invalidate old downloads.
Example
Try the included controls, inspect the preview and export only when the result fits your project.
Questions & answers
Does this recognize people automatically?
No. This is a color-based remover for flat or similar-color backgrounds, not an AI segmentation tool. Complex photographic backgrounds may not be suitable.
Can it remove colors inside a character?
Global removal can. Edge-connected mode only follows matching pixels from the edges of each composited frame, which can preserve enclosed matching regions.
Will GIF retain all colors?
Exact remaining colors are retained when they fit the GIF palette. Some composited frames need palette reduction; APNG preserves full color. GIF has binary transparency, without soft alpha edges.
What are the limits?
Up to 10 MiB, 240 frames, 2,048 pixels per edge and 32 million decoded frame pixels. Processing is cancelable and runs locally.
