Using Laser Cutting & CNC Design Preflight
Inspect SVG and supported DXF contours, find open paths and duplicate candidates, assign cut or engrave operations, prepare kerf offsets and arrange design copies on material sheets.
- Open SVG or supported ASCII DXF, or try the example. Select DXF units when the file does not declare them. Read the import notes.
- Review dimensions, open cuts, duplicate candidates and sheet boundaries. Select contours in the table, assign operations and use supported preparation actions.
- Arrange copies on sheets, inspect each sheet and export SVG/DXF plus a report. Import the geometry into your machine software for final toolpath settings.
Example
Try the sample panel and tag. Remove the duplicate panel, close the small gap and center the geometry. Kerf offsets require selecting outer and hole contours separately.
Questions & answers
Is this a machine controller or CAM system?
No. It prepares and inspects 2D geometry. It does not generate G-code, simulate machine motion or determine power, feeds or machine-specific safety settings. The time estimate is constant-speed contour travel only, excluding acceleration, dwell, repositioning and controller overhead.
Which SVG content is supported?
Visible paths and geometric primitives with numeric dimensions, viewBox and basic SVG transforms. Curves are sampled to polylines at approximately 0.5 mm intervals. Text, images, use references, masks and clipping are not reproduced; import notes identify omissions. Relative compound subpaths are skipped. Convert text and references to outlines first.
Which DXF content is supported?
ASCII DXF LINE, LWPOLYLINE without bulges, CIRCLE and ARC entities. Units can be taken from supported INSUNITS values or selected as mm/inches. Unsupported entities are reported. Geometry is translated to the origin and Y-flipped for display; exported DXF uses millimeters.
How do kerf offsets work?
Select closed convex polygon contours. The offset is half the entered kerf width, outward for an outer cut or inward for a hole. Concave paths are rejected. This does not infer hole relationships or automatically compensate every contour. Inspect the result in your machine software.
What does arrange copies do?
Bounding-box shelf layout places copies of the entire design, preserving its inner holes and relative geometry, on one or more sheets. Optional 90-degree rotation can improve capacity. It is not true contour nesting.
What are duplicate candidates?
Contours whose coordinates round to the same grid at the selected tolerance, ignoring direction and closed-contour start index. Review candidates before removing them. Different operations or different sheets are retained.
What limits apply?
4 MiB text input, 1,000 contours, 100,000 sampled vertices, sheet edges up to 10,000 mm and up to 50 layout copies. Saved projects support 8 MiB.
