Screenplay Writer

Full workspace

Write a properly formatted screenplay in your browser: scene headings, action, characters, dialogue and transitions fall into place as you type, with Tab and Enter like desktop screenwriting apps. See real page breaks with (MORE) and (CONT’D), a scene navigator, character report and a title page, then export an industry-standard PDF, a Fountain file or a Final Draft .fdx.

Your script stays on your device and is saved in this browser as you write. Use Save .fountain to keep a copy.

Using Screenplay Writer

Free screenwriting software in your browser. Type and the script formats itself the way desktop screenwriting apps do: Enter moves from a character name to dialogue and back to action, Tab switches between elements, and character names, locations and times of day autocomplete. Real page breaks with (MORE) and (CONT’D), a scene navigator, a character report and a title page help you shape the draft; export a standard PDF, a Fountain file or a Final Draft .fdx.

  1. Start with the example or File → New script, or open a .fountain, .fdx or .txt script.
  2. Type a scene heading such as INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT and press Enter to write action.
  3. Press Tab on an empty action line to write a CHARACTER name, Enter for their dialogue, and Enter again to go back to action. Type ( in empty dialogue for a parenthetical.
  4. Use the Scenes tab to jump around and see page lengths, and the Cast tab for speeches per character or to rename someone.
  5. Fill in the Title tab, check the Pages view, then export a PDF, .fountain or .fdx from the File tab.

Example

Typing INT. FERRY TERMINAL - NIGHT, a line of action, MAYA, and her line of dialogue produces a correctly indented scene in standard screenplay format, ready to print.
A long speech that reaches the bottom of a page is split with (MORE) and continues on the next page under MAYA (CONT'D), as studios expect.

Questions & answers

Is this a free alternative to Final Draft?

Yes. It handles standard screenplay elements, pagination and PDF output for free, and it can open and save Final Draft .fdx files with their elements and text. It does not include Final Draft’s production features such as revisions, reports for scheduling or collaboration.

What screenplay format does it use?

US Letter pages in 12-point Courier with 1.5-inch left and 1-inch right margins, 54 lines per page, and the usual indents for character names, parentheticals, dialogue and transitions. Page numbers start on page 2.

What is a Fountain file?

Fountain is a plain-text screenplay format (fountain.io). Writing apps such as Highland, Slugline, Fade In and WriterSolo can open it, and you can read or edit it in any text editor.

How do (MORE) and (CONT’D) work?

When dialogue does not fit at the bottom of a page, it is split between sentences or lines: (MORE) is printed under the first part and the character name with (CONT’D) above the rest on the next page.

How long will my movie be?

A rough industry rule is one page per minute of screen time, so a 100-page script runs about 100 minutes. The page counter shows this estimate.

Is my script uploaded?

No. The script is written and saved in your browser. Export a .fountain or PDF to keep a copy elsewhere.

Can I use bold, italic or underline?

Yes. Select text and press Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I or Ctrl+U. They are stored with Fountain’s **bold**, *italic* and _underline_ marks and printed in the PDF.
