Earth & brown colors

Orange-brown chocolate, red-brown brown and lighter tan

Working with earth & brown colors

These earth references have different undertones: chocolate leans orange, CSS brown leans red and tan provides a lighter warm companion. Material texture and lighting distinguish wood, fabric, clay and food far more than one shared color name.

Use tan on lit edges, brown for a base and a clearly darker outline. In a website, preserve a stable reading surface rather than turning every paragraph into a material effect.

Families are editorial groupings, not strict hue boundaries. Teal and turquoise sit in blue-green territory; a different project may group them with greens.

A color name is a starting point

Digital codes describe sRGB colors. Natural objects, paint, ink and screens can look different under different lighting or calibration. Visual references illustrate color families rather than exact measured matches. Placeholder illustrations are clearly labeled. Design ideas are suggestions, not universal claims about emotion or culture.
