Using Pixel Art & Sprite Editor
A free pixel art and sprite animation editor in your browser for game art, icons, avatars and retro GIFs. Draw with a pixel-perfect pencil, lines, rectangles, ellipses and fill, mirror your strokes for symmetrical sprites, stack layers and animate frame by frame with onion skin and a playable timeline. Use retro palettes such as PICO-8, Game Boy, NES or Sweetie 16, then export a PNG, an animated GIF or a sprite sheet with JSON frame data for game engines.
- Click New and choose a size such as 16×16 or 32×32, or open a PNG, GIF or a saved project.
- Pick colours from the palette: left click paints with the primary colour, right click with the secondary. Load a retro palette from the palette list.
- Draw with the pencil (B), eraser (E), fill (G), line (L), rectangle (U) and ellipse (O). Turn on mirror X or Y for symmetrical sprites; hold Shift for straight lines and squares.
- Animate in the timeline: duplicate the frame (⧉), change what moves, turn on onion skin (🧅) to see the neighbouring frames, set the delay and press Play.
- Export a PNG, an animated GIF or a sprite sheet with JSON, scaled up with sharp pixels, and save the project to keep layers and frames.
Example
A 16×16 slime with two frames – one body one pixel lower – and a 160 ms delay makes a looping idle animation; export it as a GIF at ×8 for a 128×128 preview. Open a sprite sheet PNG of 4 walking frames, use ✂ Split sheet with 32×32 tiles to turn it into 4 frames, fix a pixel and export the sheet again with JSON for your game engine.
Questions & answers
Is this a free alternative to Aseprite?
For most sprite work, yes: pixel-perfect drawing, layers, frames, onion skin, palettes, animated GIF and sprite sheet export are free with no install. It does not have tags, tilemaps or scripting.
How do I make an animated GIF of my pixel art?
Add frames with the duplicate button, change each frame, set the delay in milliseconds, then choose Export → Animated GIF and a scale such as ×4 or ×8 so the pixels stay sharp.
What is pixel-perfect drawing?
When you draw freehand lines, it removes the extra corner pixels that make lines look doubled, so curves stay one pixel wide.
Can I export a sprite sheet for Unity, Godot or Phaser?
Yes. Export → Sprite sheet PNG + JSON lays the frames in a row, column or grid and writes a JSON file with each frame's position, size and duration (in the common texture-atlas format).
Can I open my existing sprites?
Yes: PNG, GIF (all frames), JPEG and WebP up to 1024 × 1024 pixels, plus project files saved here. Use Split sheet to cut a sprite sheet into frames.
Will my work be lost if I close the tab?
It is saved in this browser automatically. Save the project file to keep a copy you can open on any computer.
Which palettes are included?
PICO-8, Game Boy, NES, DawnBringer 16, Sweetie 16 and 1-bit, and you can build your own or make one from the colours in your art.
